Star Wars: Rebels

Tiny teaser for the followup to The Clone Wars. Similar style which channels the original trilogy.

Can't really say much more until there is more to see! Still excited.

Episode VII

I would love to see Mark Strong in Star Wars.

Prophecy

Whilst on a bit of a Star Wars kick I thought I would throw in a quick post on my favourite storyline from Season 3 of the Clone Wars series. I particular enjoyed Anakin being shown his future, as a way to lead him to the Dark Side to 'prevent' such events. The story did involve a little bit of a mind wipe, so as to not to mess with the continuity of the films - but was an incredibly enjoyable story to watch. The visions were reminiscent (although far more literal) of the Vader Prophecy in the original 2D Clone Wars series.

Star Wars: Underworld

Star Wars: Underworld is the working title for the long in-production Star Wars live action tv series. In a recent interview Rick McCallum divulged this as well as reiterating the kind of show that they are hopeful of producing sometime in the next 5 years.

To summarize, the tone and target audience for the series remains very adult, akin to Battlestar Galactica or Mad Men. Focusing on the workings of the society in the galaxy far, far away - removing the Skywalkers from the equation. The main hurdle is how to produce a vfx-heavy show within a small(ish) budget and retain the quality and within reasonable time constraints, as well as which broadcasting approach to take in regards to distribution. McCallum also comments that they have 50-odd scripts ready to go.

Hopefully it comes to fruition.

May The 4th Be With You.

Here I am sitting and waiting for the stupid page to load, it having occupied my second monitor for the past hour and what happens? KABLOOM. Internet fail. Not so much internet but rather the server's inability to handle to countless of worldwide Star Wars nerds sitting at the computers attempting to discover what exactly will be on the Star Wars Blu-Rays.

My distaste for blu-ray is well know BUT it is Star Wars and there has been promises of all new features (interviews, footage etc) that could be of great interest to me. This is coming from a bloke who already owns 4 different copies of Star Wars on various media. Two VHS copies (one in the cardboard slips in the golf box, the other plastic covers) and two copies of the original films on dvd (2004 dvd box set and the 2006 re-release of the original theatrical versions) as well as the prequel trilogy on dvd. It's not unbelievable to comprehend that when I inevitably purchase a PS3, I may indeed bite the bullet and buy Star Wars on blu-ray.

So now what do I do? I'm going to hit send on this job application, put Empire Strikes Back on and climb into bed so that I can attempt to get some sleep before getting up at 6am.

May the Force be with you, always.

LucasArts has hired Tim Longo (previous Tomb Raider creative and franchise director) as Creative Director on an unannounced game.
Longo has a working relationship with LucasArts which includes Lead Designer on Star Wars: Starfighter and Jedi Starfighter, Creative Director on Star Wars: Republic Commando. His recent projects include Tomb Raider: Underworld and Anniversary. His hiring could be the intial step towards a number of game, assumably Star Wars-related such as another starfighter based game (personally I think another Rogue Squadron would be a dream) or finally the long-awaited Imperial Commando (the long spoken of sequel to Republic Commando).
This aside my inital hopes and dreams did not jump to either of these but rather a Tomb Raider-inspired Indiana Jones game. That IS the dream. A third person, puzzle based adventure game would be absolutely mind blowing. Think back on recent Indiana Jones games - LEGO Indiana Jones and it's sequel are strong, as are all the LEGO games but they are lacking in obvious areas in regards to their audience. Indiana Jones and the Staff of King's that hit Wii was a promising game until you hit the shooting portion of the game and it lost all balance and was unusable. The Indy game that showed the greatest promise (which I only played the demo of) was Indiana Jones and the Emporer's Tomb, released back in 2003. Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine (1999) was also along these same lines.
That's nearing the 10 year mark, I think it could be time to explore these grounds again, but we can only hope. There hasn't been a decent Star Wars starfighter game for years either, so if they are pursuing either franchise it would be a welcome development.

This is why I love Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. They are beyond awesome.

Liam Neeson reprising the role of Qui-Gon Jinn for the Clone Wars

Liam Neeson will indeed be heading back to that galaxy far, far away. EW has revealed that Neeson will be reprising his role from Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace in 2 upcoming episodes of the successful animated series 'Star Wars The Clone Wars'. If you're aware of you Star Wars history you will know that Neeson's character in fact died at the end of Episode I, leaving Obi-Wan to raise and train Anakin to become a Jedi.

Fans of the Expanded Universe will recognise that Qui-Gon was the first Jedi to retain his identity after death and went on to teach Yoda and Obi-Wan this lesson, which becomes apparent throughout the Original Trilogy. Fans will no doubt argue that there are instances where Qui-Gon states that he cannot appear as a 'ghost' only as a voice and that Obi-Wan is clearly unaware of his other-worldly presence come the events of Episode III. For those unaware or unconcerned overly with minor continuity details, they will be glad to see him back.

The actor told EW that “these characters resonate…even after all these years. Growing up, my heroes were cowboys; they were strong and mysterious, and it seemed like they always rode off into the sunset. For kids today, Star Wars has that same kind of magic. I really wanted to be a part of that.”

Be sure to check out the clip over at EW.

Whilst searching for a simple psd that continues to elude me I stumbled across all my uni work from 2007. Man, what a difference there was between my 2nd Year work and my 3rd and 4th year work. It's like all my enthusiasm was destroyed in the first half of 3rd year and it all went down hill from there. At the moment I have been feeling a bit down, but this has encouraged me to retake that enthusiasm to life in general - so expect some cool shit to happen from here on! I needed a boost, so I'm pretty stoked that I found it!

A few choice snapshots that I unearthed included the above image of my work station circa 2007. Such a cluttered wonderful mess it was. Two computers, one awesome tablet and a keyboard tray that my brand new girlfriend would break probably about a week later! (damn you Elizabeth!). I cannot wait to move in October and set up something just as wonderful in my new place. This was all taken around the time I was doing my 'recreate a special effect' assessment which for me included attempting to use a model of an AT-AT to create one of the greatest scenes in Star Wars. The model required epic slicing and dicing and the creation of knee joints amongst other things in order to actually have the required functionality. It went pretty well. I can't seem to find the final video (which had a terrible snowspeeder comp going on) but I did find this one of the shots of the walker. Not terrible for my first stop motion attempt.

Some new images from the Force Unleashed II. The hanging city looks absolutely amazing! I have a suspicion about the story now - because the image of Starkiller fighting in the rain is very obviously on Kamino. So Starkiller could survive through cloning. It's not the most original idea in the world but within the Star Wars Universe it makes sense I suppose. It's not like Vader would have skipped out on taking genetic material from his apprentice. Speculation aside, we'll see.

It looks cool.

30 years ago today Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back was released in cinema...

Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse received a letter from George Lucas recently, congratulating them on Lost's success;

"Congratulations on pulling off an amazing show. Don't tell anyone ... but when 'Star Wars' first came out, I didn't know where it was going either. The trick is to pretend you've planned the whole thing out in advance. Throw in some father issues and references to other stories -- let's call them homages -- and you've got a series.

In six seasons, you've managed to span both time and space, and I don't think I'm alone in saying that I never saw what was around the corner. Now that it's all coming to an end, it's impressive to see how much was planned out in advance and how neatly you've wrapped up everything. You've created something really special. I'm sad that the series is ending, but I look forward to seeing what you two are going to do next."

It's nice to see creatives acknowledging the success and ingenuity of others. Damon Lindelof commented - "I apologise for everything I said about the prequels". Funny stuff!
