An excellent safety awareness video for Melbourne Metro Trains. An awfully catchy tune accompanied by cute, yet morbid character that proceed to harm themselves/be harmed in all sorts of entertaining ways. Has taken the internet by storm - close to 8.5m views (Youtube) in a week.
Also has an excellent website with simple (and extremely entertaining) interaction.
Sad that it wasn't created by an Australian company.
My entry for this month's LoopdeLoop challenge. The theme was 'rock'. Thought I would tackle the different phases of one possible path for the musically-enthusiastic.
As you can see I have broken from my usual numbering system for my blog posts.
I grew quite attached to the system, but some posts just call for an actual title as a opposed to a serial number. Fear not! The system will remain for the most part, but I shall break from it from time to time.
I am currently employed to do some freelance illustration work (which I should really be doing instead of blogging) on a very exciting project which I'm psyched to be involved with. At the current stage that is all I cant tell you guys about that particular undertaking, sorry!
Still stuck at Liz's parents place, going to be for a while yet - have to house sit for a few months while they're on holidays. I'd kill to get out of here, insanity has well set in and I am well on my way to blown lunacy. I never intended on being here longer than March and yet here I am heading into July and not looking at getting out of here till October. I just can't put up with much more of this I'm afraid. There's an assumption that we don't know how to do ANYTHING which is killing me. I'm sorry, but after living on my own for 4 years to back to living under someone is just like walking through a sheet of glass and then rolling around in the shards just to make sure I'm bleeding enough.
Anyhoo.. Enough on that.
I'm very jealous of all of you who are in Melbourne and am regretting coming to Sydney instead of Melbourne (not for the first time). The Tim Burton Exhibition at ACMI opened yesterday and I would have loved to have been there to meet Mr Burton and get his signature. I have a NEED to get one of the limited copies of 'The Art of Tim Burton' but I don't like my chances of any being left by the time that I'll likely make it down to Melbourne (the long weekend in October). I may have to request one of my Melbourne-based buddies to grab me a copy. That could work. nb. Part way through writing this I was talking to Pam (she's in Melb) and she's going to pick me up a copy! Woo!
A few other things on my mind are what is going to be taking place in the next few years. By October 2011 I will have completed a short film and concurrently my Master of Arts Practice, something that is very exciting and feels very far away. I have been a bit slack in the past month and a bit on updating my Masters blog and I really need to get onto that before my supervisors get onto me about it. Sp far the project is proceeding reasonably on time, a few hold ups with ordering a book in have cost me some time (the book took 6 and a half weeks to arrive). If you're interested in seeing what is happening with that be sure to check out the afore mentioned blog, which will be receiving steady updates again throughout this week.
So that's happening and there is still this uncertainty in regards to full-time work, or at least regular weekly work that would allow me to live comfortably without fear of being income-less one week and thus unable to pay rent etc. I have landed a well-paying freelance gig which I mentioned in a previous entry which is going well, have been working on it for nearly a week now. It is unsure how long the work will go for and IF the project takes off there will be constant work for a reasonable time period. But I am obviously not betting on that as my only source of income, that would be foolish. I remain on the job hunt; if I could attain a regular flow of freelance work I would be quite pleased, it's obviously not ideal but it's more than I've got going at the moment.
Lastly, I checked out the new season of Futurama the other night and I did not come away disappointed. I was concerned for the new season (Season 5, not 6!) after the failure that was the 4 Futurama movies. That may be an unfair statement, I did enjoy Bender's Big Score - but it lacked the punchy pacing that makes Futurama flow. By the time the last film came out it was terrible and I was sad that the series would end on such an awful note which did not reflect it's successes for 4 years prior. 'The Devil's Hands are My Playthings' was one of the greatest Futurama episodes and the perfect unintended ending to the series back in 2003. However, after watching 'Rebirth' and 'In A Gada Da Leela' I am more than pleased to see Futurama back were it belongs; syndicated television. Doubly pleased that they followed up on Fry and Leela's relationship - which was something that after the end of Season 4 they ignored completely until throwing it into the end of the final film. That was poorly handled I must say.
Highlights of the 2 episodes would definitely be Zapp's Victory Yodel, Professor Farnsworth, Stem Cells, Robot Leela, hack on CSI Miami, V-Giny, Shrapnel-vision and most especially 'The Man With No Name' - Zapp Brannigan. Oh and also Bender taking a bit of a back seat unlike his overbearing presence in the films.
Well here we are. 136 posts later I have reached the 1 Year Anniversary for my blog - who would have thought I'd actually keep going at it this long?
It's difficult to wrap my head around the fact that 1 year ago I was in 4th Year uni, down in Melbourne on work experience when I started this blog. And now I'm in Sydney still looking for a job.
How time flies.
I graduated on the 15th, it was a double whammy with my birthday the same day. It was a good day, the rest of the trip was pretty uneventful - I was quite disgusted by several friends who were very unwilling to make an effort to catch up while I was in town for a very limited amount of time. I was quite displeased. If it is them visiting, I make an effort and meet them halfway. But apparently if I'm in town I am expected to go to them at their convenience. No doubt they are offended I only saw them briefly once, but I did invite them to a few different happening whilst I was there. The best they could do was catch up with me for a little bit on the first day and ask me when I was coming down next?? I was there for 5 days, come on!
Having said this, there were a few friends who made a huge effort. I greatly appreciate the effort!
I found this article today online; http://www.thevine.com.au/entertainment/articles/the-tim-burton-show-is-coming-to-melbourne.aspx
From the 24th June - 10th October 2010 the exhibition will be hosted by the ACMI in Melbourne, which i went to a very enjoyable (and cheap!) exhibition of the History of Pixar back in 2007. So I am rather psyched for this coming attraction. Apparently the exhibition will have both professional and personal works of his on display including artwork, sketches, storyboards and most awesomely puppets!!!!!It is also going to include works from the upcoming Alice in Wonderland which is fantastic. So expect me to attend at some point next year whilst its here.
So over Wagga and uni, I cannot wait until I complete my course and move to somewhere with a different climate to Young as well. I need something new and different and not as regimented as Uni. I desperately want to be able to finish work and then not have to think about anything I want rather than have to worry about assessments and the expectations of lecturers etc.
Uni is not really doing anything for me at the moment, there are moments of excitement but overall I just lack the enthusiasm that I should have and I think this is due to the structure and the general nature of uni. I don’t care for some of the assessment tasks I am being given to do and that I am afraid that this is reflected in the final product. I want to do something different, but the guidelines of the subject or assessment do not allow me to do the things I want. I try anyway and am feeling as though I am missing the mark in part on some things. But I fear this is quite normal for being in 4th Year of Uni.
I need something new to inspire me. I need a new place, a new job and some new hobbies. I find myself not caring for the opinions and petty cliques of those people around me, whether it is friends or colleagues at uni. I find that a group in one degree in particular has developed a complex that they seem to deem it acceptable that they treat the people that they once respected with a rather large amount of disregard – even those that count themselves friends with these individuals. I would like to say that this is my opinion alone but I am afraid that it is not. This is unacceptable as far as I am concerned but I no longer have the patience to put up with this. This is one of my many reasons for wishing that uni was over right now so that I could get the hell out of Wagga, move to Melbourne and do something of merit and that I enjoy more than what I am currently undertaking.
I did a week of work experience at XYZ Studios [www.xyzstudios.com] during the holidays. It was really great, it was a quiet week for the studio but I still learnt a lot about how the industry (+ industry houses) work. The studio was really nice as were the people that work there. I worked on a few different things; an animatic for a Herron TVC, motion graphics for AGIDEAS, concept for MIFF. The best thing about the whole thing was observing how the studio worked and their file system and how to manage all different versions of the work without the file sizes and number to spiral out of control. I haven’t undertaken any work experience prior to this but found that the experience is definitely worth it. Not too many (if any) of my friends and classmates have done any work experience and I think that they are missing out and may be slightly under-prepared for the expectations of the industry that they are wanting to find employment in.
Basically I have come away from it with a tad more enthusiasm and a definitely clearer understanding of where my work (and its standards) need to be to stand out and blow some minds.
